Overview

The Bring Your Own Storage (BYOS) feature saves Video SDK cloud recordings directly to your Amazon S3 bucket instead of the Zoom cloud. After you enable BYOS, Zoom delivers all new Video SDK cloud recordings to your configured S3 location.

BYOS changes only where your finished recordings are delivered. Zoom generates the recordings themselves through its standard cloud recording pipeline, which operates similarly to cloud recording for Zoom Meetings.

You are responsible for all S3 storage costs. Zoom does not charge for BYOS storage, but Video SDK Cloud Recording minute charges still apply. Any existing recordings that remain in the Zoom cloud will continue to incur Zoom storage charges until you delete them.

Storage terms

BYOS documentation uses the word "location" for two different things.

• Communications Content Storage Location - an account setting that selects the country or region where Zoom stores your communications content. This setting governs Zoom's own storage, not your bucket.
• Storage location - a destination you configure in Zoom, made up of a name, a region, a bucket name, and credentials. A storage location is a configuration entry, not a geographic place.
• Region - the AWS region of your own S3 bucket, such as us-west-2. You set this for each storage location, and you control it.

Manage BYOS recordings with APIs

Use the cloud recording APIs to manage, play, and download BYOS recordings.

The Zoom web portal holds only the metadata for a BYOS recording, such as its title and thumbnail, not the recording files. Because of this, the Recordings page can show a recording whose files are no longer in your bucket, and deleting a recording there removes only the metadata.
